The Phantom of the Opera - Gaston Leroux, Alexander Teixeira de Mattos LOVE this book. Scared the crap out of me the first time I read it. Especially the part where Christine is alone in her dressing room and hears something slide across the door. For a book written in the early 1900s it's surprisingly exciting and you don't have to wade through dozens of pages of overly wordy descriptions of one room or action or object. That's often the worst part of older books.
